The Scottish Highlands: Five Sights Not To Miss
The Scottish Highlands might not be on everyone’s bucket list, but oh my god they should be. I spent ten days venturing through the Highlands and cried the night before I had to come home. The sights were some of the most amazing I had ever seen. Think misty mountains, historic castles, clans and tartans, and a natural beauty that truly takes your breath away.
Tucked away in the rugged landscapes of northern Scotland, the Scottish Highlands lure travelers with their enchanting beauty and rich history. Today on the blog, I’m sharing some of the top sights that I think are not to be missed in the Scottish Highlands, each telling its own story.
Three Sisters
A visit to the Highlands cannot be complete without seeing the iconic Three Sisters, a trio of peaks in Glencoe. As you drive over the winding roads through Glencoe, these dramatic peaks come into view. Think misty and rugged mountains towering over the glen. The Three Sisters are not just a a cool scenic view, though. They also hold tales of Scottish history and legends, adding a layer of mystery to this unmatched scenery and making them an integral part of the mystical charm that defines the Scottish Highlands.
Urquhart Castle
Sitting high above Loch Ness is Urquhart Castle. The remains of the castle hold a rich history that spans over a thousand years. Once a mighty fortress, its strategic location and turbulent past make it a compelling stop for history enthusiasts. The castle ruins offer stunning views of Loch Ness, and visitors can explore the towers, walls, and dungeons that hold wild tales of medieval Scotland. Tip: make the trek to the site by water to take in views of Urquhart Castle from the Loch.
Glenfinnan Viaduct
Familiar to my fellow Harry Potter fans as the Hogwarts Express bridge, the Glenfinnan Viaduct in the Glenfinnan Valley offers up some of the best panoramic views of the Scottish Highlands. The viaduct is not just a testament to human ingenuity; it is set against a backdrop of serene landscapes, making it a must-see. Did you know you can ride the steam train across the Viaduct? This was an absolute must for me! Make sure to take in views both on and off the steam train for a most epic day. Tip: if you want to ride the steam train, book way in advance!
Culloden Moor
To be fair, I had no idea what Culloden Moor was before watching one of my favorite shows, Outlander. Culloden Moor is the site of the infamous Battle of Culloden in 1746. Stepping onto the battlefield, you really can feel the weight of history walking through the memorial cairn and learning about the events that unfolded here. Culloden Moor is a somber reminder of the Jacobite uprising. The visitor center provides an immersive experience, bringing to life the stories of the clans and soldiers who fought on that fateful day. I suggest downloading a free podcast about the Battle of Culloden as you walk through the site. I did and found it to be really interesting!
Eilean Donan Castle
Probably one of the most famous castles in all of Scotland is Eilean Donan Castle. This fairy-tale castle is a true Highland gem, with its turrets and towers reflected in the tranquil waters that surround it. Eilean Donan Castle has an intense history. It played a role in the defense against Viking raids and the Jacobite rebellions. Today, it stands as one of Scotland’s most photographed and beloved landmarks. Check out more on tours here!

From its rugged beauty of the Three Sisters to the historic resonance of Culloden Moor, the Scottish Highlands offer up unmatched experiences for all travelers.
